Very fine needles are used. The pinpricks are brief and usually only mildly painful. Anaesthesia is generally unnecessary.

When will I see the result?

The first effects appear around day three. The result develops until day fourteen. It is then assessed at the review.

How is the result reassessed?

A review takes place around day fifteen, once the effect is complete. The standardised photographs from the initial consultation are taken again: front, profiles, three-quarters, same distance, same light, same head position. Same photos, same measurements: we compare, then adjust if needed.

What if the result does not suit me?

There is no antidote. The doctor assesses the situation and may sometimes correct an asymmetry. Otherwise, the effect fades with time.

From what age can someone have this treatment?

For an adult, examination establishes the indication independently of a fixed preventive age. Treatment is offered for a precise indication.

Will my face look frozen?

The dose reduces contraction while preserving expression. Under-correction is preferred; outcomes vary between people.

What happens if I stop?

Muscle movement gradually returns. Expression lines reappear as before. After stopping, their evolution resumes its usual course.

Botulinum toxin and “botox”: are they the same thing?

Not exactly. “Botox” is the brand name of a medicine containing botulinum toxin type A; in everyday language, the word is often used for botulinum toxin in general. Several botulinum toxin type A medicines are authorised in Belgium, and they are prescription-only medicines. The choice of product is made during the medical consultation.

Who performs the treatment?

I perform every injection myself. A nurse assists me at each session: preparation, asepsis, blood draw for PRP and monitoring. Two carers for you, and the medical act remains the doctor's, as Belgian law requires.

How the treatment works, and what it is for.

Some wrinkles come from repeated muscle contraction: frown lines, forehead lines, crow's feet. Botulinum toxin type A, often called “botox” in everyday language, temporarily blocks the nerve signal to these muscles. The dose is matched to muscle strength, favouring under-correction: a measured correction, with results that vary between people.

Before the session

Tell us if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a neuromuscular condition (such as myasthenia), and about any current medication.
If you take an anticoagulant or aspirin, tell us. Never stop prescribed medication without your doctor's advice.
Avoid alcohol the day before: it can encourage minor bruising.
If possible, come without makeup on the upper face.
Plan an important event more than two weeks later: this is how long the full effect can take.

After the session

Small bumps at the injection points fade within about thirty minutes. Redness or bruising is possible. Activities resume immediately.
Stay upright for four hours. Avoid massaging the area, as well as intense exercise, sauna and steam room on the same day.

How long the effects last

The effect usually lasts three to five months. This varies with muscle strength and physical activity. The muscle gradually regains its mobility.

Safety and warning signs

Contraindications

Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Neuromuscular diseases (myasthenia gravis, Lambert-Eaton syndrome, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis)
Infection at the injection site
Known hypersensitivity to botulinum toxin or to any of the excipients
Certain drug combinations, assessed in consultation (aminoglycosides, curare-like agents and related drugs)

Adverse effects and complications

Frequent and transient: headache in the days following the session, bruising, redness or tenderness at the injection site.

Rare and transient: asymmetry of the gaze or eyebrow, eyelid droop, a feeling of heaviness in the forehead. These effects are related to the diffusion of the product and fade spontaneously along with it, within a few weeks.

Exceptionally: allergic reaction. Any unusual event should be reported to the practice, which has a protocol for managing complications.

By public transport: metro 5 (Veeweyde station), line 81 (Ysaye stop), buses 46 and 75. Street parking; allow extra time at peak hours. Hours: Monday 13:00–18:00 · Wednesday 13:00–18:00, by appointment. The doctor consults in French, Turkish or English. Consultations also in Braine-l'Alleud, by appointment.
